A Reader’s Response †The Lesson

The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara is a story of a naughty little girl and her gang of kids who were bundled up one summer day to go with Miss Moore to a toy store. Sylvia and her cousin Sugar are with Fat Butt, Rosie Giraffe, Mercedes, Q. T. , Junebug and Flyboy, not their real names but monikers given them by Sylvia. The names came from their most obvious trait, Fat Butt for his fondness for food, Mercedes for her ritzy tastes, Q. T. , is the youngest, and Rosie Giraffe is always ready to kick asses. One may guess Sugar is for her being the exact opposite of sourly Sylvia. Miss Moore wants to teach the kids about money, specifically, how much of it can buy what. Her objective really is to make them see how much they can not afford compared with what the rest of their fellow citizens can, half of which are whites. If there is one thing that can sure catch the interest of kids, it is a toy. So Miss Moore took them to an upscale toy store at Fifth Avenue, when all the toys the kids knew and had were from Pop’s. The tone of the story is sarcastic all throughout, from the first person point of view of Sylvia. Bambara’s style is effective in her portrayal of Sylvia, as a little Black, spoiled brat who has a vocabulary peppered with cuss words such as â€Å"sorry-ass, goddamn, boring-ass, dumb shit, smelly-ass, smart-ass, nappy-head bitch, scratching the shit out of me† and who believes that â€Å"white folks crazy. † She uses similes to introduce Miss Moore who is â€Å"black as hell† and whom â€Å"grownups †¦ talked behind her back like a dog. † With the story, Bambara takes the readers to pore into the psyche of a child born on the on the other side of the tracks. The reader would think that it is a gang member speaking instead of a precocious kid from the block when she says â€Å"she would much rather †¦ go to the Sunset and terrorize the West Indian kids and take their hair ribbons and their money too. † The story is told from the eyes of a child ultimately bored with how the adults attach so much importance to the mundane. Sylvia asks, â€Å"Watcha bring us here for, Miss Moore? † To which Miss Moore replies with, â€Å"You sound angry, Sylvia. Are you mad about something? † Bambara keeps the lightness in the treatment of the characters, who are all kids except for Miss Moore, by strong doses of humor. Big Butt wants to buy â€Å"that there. † Rosie Giraffe cuts him with â€Å"That there? You don’t even what it is, stupid. † When it is Rosie’s turn, she asks what a paperweight is. Flyboy answers with, â€Å"To weigh paper with, dumbbell. † There are moments when the kids sound pathetic. Miss Moore asks about their desks at home where they do their homework. Junebug says he does not have a desk, Big Butt says he does not do his homework and Flyboy says he does not have a home. The theme of the story is about issue of economic disparity, among all others, between the Whites and Blacks. It can be an emotional one when discussed seriously and earnestly. The Lesson successfully attempts to present the issue in a novel manner without taking the truth away and the need for it to be confronted. Bambara uses literary techniques to bring home the point to her readers and provide the insightful highlights of the story. For a $1,195. 00 toy sailboat, the kids’ reactions are as follow: (1) with Hyperbole, Sylvia thinks with â€Å"That much money it should last forever. † Q. T. figures that only the rich shop in the store that sells the sailboat. (2) with Litotes, Flyboy tells him â€Å"You are a bright boy †¦ What was your first clue? † Sylvia fancies a $35 clown that somersaults. (3) with Anaphora, Thirty-five dollars could buy new bunk beds for Junior and Gretchen’s boy. Thirty-five dollars and the whole household could visit Grand-daddy Nelson in the country. Thirty-five dollars would pay for the rent and the piano bill too. † These lines are significant because even the usually doubting Sylvia realizes what other important things $35 can buy, something to sleep on for two boys, the happiness of an old man, a roof on the family’s head with their entertainment thrown in. Miss Moore’s plan must be working alright. (4) with Hyphopora, â€Å"Imagine for a minute what kind of society it is in which some people can spend on a oy what it would cost to feed a family of six or seven. What do you think? † Sugar verbalizes her disgust for the insensitivity of some. The girl has her values right when she is equates the toy with food for seven people. Buying the toy is the height of insensitivity. Aside from the last two quotes above, there are others that add to its meaningful dissection of the social issue of disparity. â€Å"What kinda work they do and how they live and how come we ain’t on it? Who we are is who we are. † These are the words of Miss Moore, typifying those who quest ion the inequality of things and yet accept the fact as it is. They do not even challenge the situation and right the wrong of it. â€Å"But it don’t necessarily have to be that way †¦ poor people have to wake up and demand their share of the pie. † These words are also from Miss Moore, speaking for those who believe that something can and must be done. It is like saying that nothing will change for as long as people do not know how to fight for what is by right theirs. â€Å"I think †¦ this is not much of a democracy if you ask me. Equal chance to pursue happiness means an equal crack at the dough †¦Ã¢â‚¬  This is entirely wrong. Democracy is not handed down, it is something one fights for. The grandmother is a persistent old woman who gets her way, in one or the other. She has a bagful of antics to get her family, particularly her son to see things the way she sees them and get them to agree to her plans for everybody. She meets opposition from the two most impossible to convince people in the family, her two grandchildren. She threatens them every now and then with a â€Å"Just remember that the next time you want me to curl your hair. † She almost always gets what she wants, but not always including this particular trip to Florida. She wants to go to Tennessee instead to see old friends. Her spin about an escapee from the penitentiary roaming the highways of Florida is not working on her son Bailey. Nonetheless, on D-day she is the first to board the car. While on the way, she remembers a particular old house she remembers from childhood that she says would be nice to see again. Bailey is hearing none of it. She consciously lie about some secret room where the family silver is, â€Å"not telling the truth but wishing she were† to get much needed support from the oppositionists, her grand kids. This time she wins and they were heading to this place through a 36-mile dirt road. It suddenly dawns on her that they are a state away from the house, which is in Tennessee and not in Georgia. The much feared escapee from the Penitentiary comes along with his two other companions. This is the turning point of the story. O’Connor makes the characters so real in the way she portrays the grandmother and June Star. Grandmother dances to the music of Tennessee Waltz while Bailey stares fiercely at her. The irreverent June Star thinks her grandmother does not want to be left out in trips because she does not want to miss anything, that she does not want to live in a â€Å"broken-down place† like that of Red Sam and after the accident, she says that â€Å"nobody’s killed† with a tinge of disappointment when she sees her grandmother coming out alive from the car. O’Connor is effective in giving life to their characters that one will want to squeeze the neck of June Star or give Grandmother a big hug. O’Connor uses Similes â€Å"face was as yellow as the T-shirt,† Alliterations â€Å"big black battered,† â€Å"dark and deep,† â€Å"Don’t see no sun †¦ don’t see no cloud,† Anaphora â€Å"Tennessee has the mountains and Georgia has the hills,† and Allusion â€Å"Gone With the Wind. † The story tells us about the ironies and contrasts in life. There is the grandmother who sees the beauty in anything and everything like the mountains of Tennessee and the hills of Georgia, and the cute little Negro boy by the door of a shack, dances to the beat of an old favorite, takes time to see friends, calls a day beautiful in spite of the danger she is in and sees a good man in the Misfit out to kill all of them. The other character in the story is the Misfit who is hardened to the core. He thinks the world is out to get him and treat him nasty all the time. He does not know of a single goodness left in people. There are meaningful quotes in the story that touches the reader about unfamiliar scenes of real life. Flannery O’Connor’s â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find† has several: â€Å"I was not a bad boy that I remember of †¦ but sometimes along the line I done something wrong and got sent to the penitentiary. I was buried alive. † Society has not been fair and kind to the kid who became the Misfit. He was not given a fair shake in life that being bad became his way of life, in and out of the penitentiary. I call myself The Misfit †¦ because I can’t make what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment. † The Misfit was too young to make out what it was he had done that he was punished for so long and so harsh. Whatever it was he must have committed, he was sure that he did not deserve the hard life he had been through. â€Å"It was the same case with Him [Jesus] as with m e except He hadn’t committed any crime and they could prove I had committed one because they have the papers on me. † The Misfit compared his conviction with that of Jesus Christ, who he said was innocent. He, too, was innocent as far as his conscience goes, but while they had no basis to establish the guilt of Jesus, they had papers to convict him to life in the penitentiary. â€Å"She would have been a good woman †¦ if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life. † For the Misfit, only death would save people from being bad. It could be the reason why he kept killing people, to save them from being bad. He thinks that the longer people live, they keep going bad.

Was Thomas More a medieval, essays Sir Thomas More was an Englishman who lived from 1478-1535. During that time period, he was a well revered and respected man, a chancellor of England who served under Henry VIII. He his most known for two acts; the writing of his book Utopia, and for dying for what he believed in. More was also a Christian Humanist, many of which now view him as a martyr of their cause. Based historical facts, and actions he took, More can be considered more of a rather modern man than a medieval man. Luthers ideas and reforms on Christianity were in direct conflict with the Catholic Church. These ideas, reforms, and thoughts on faith was the spark plug that started the Protestant Reformation. Luther began his career as an Augustinian Monk in the Roman Catholic Church. Consequently, Luther was initially loyal to the papacy, and even after many theological conflicts, he attempted to bring about his reconciliation with the Church. But this didnt last long because Luther waged battle with the papacy. Luther was to become a theologian. This is where he wrote the Ninety-Five Theses. It is usually considered to be the original document of the Reformation. Basically, this document exposed all the wrongs of the Catholic Church from indulgences to immoral behavior of priests. When Thomas More wrote his book, its name showed people how he felt on the subject. He called it Utopia, which means literally nowhere. Why would More write a book on an ideal civilization, and call it nowhere? Most scholars believe, that he was trying to show the people of his time how far they were from an ideal society, and at the same time implying the hopelessness of the human race to ever achieve a Utopia. He deemed it A good place which is no place. Mores book dealt widely on the faults of mankind, and almost nothing with religious aspects. If More was truly a medieval man,...

The Science of Star Trek

The Science of Star Trek Star Trek is one of the most popular science fiction series of all time and loved by people around the world. In its TV shows, movies, novels, comics, and podcasts,  future inhabitants of Earth go on quests to the far reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy. They travel across space using advanced technologies like warp drive propulsion systems and artificial gravity. Along the way, the Star Trek denizens explore strange new worlds. The science and technology in Star Trek are dazzling and lead many fans  to ask: could such propulsion systems and other technological advances exist now or in the future?   The starship Enterprise came into public view with the first Star Trek show in the 1960s. Getty Images/ In a few cases, the science is actually quite sound and we either have the technology now (such as the first rudimentary medical tricorders and communications devices) or someone will be developing it sometime in the near future. Other technologies in the Star Trek universe are sometimes  in agreement with our understanding of physics- such as the warp drive- but are highly improbable to ever exist. For those, we might have to wait until our technology abilities catch up to theory. Still Trek ideas are more in the realm of imagination and dont stand a chance of ever becoming a reality. What Exists Today or Will Sometime in the Near Future Impulse Drive: The impulse drive is not unlike our chemical rockets of today, only more advanced. With advances taking place today, it is not unreasonable to think that we will one day have propulsion systems similar to the impulse drive on the starship Enterprise. Cloaking Devices: The irony here, of course, is that this is a technology that humans have yet to grasp in the early  Star Trek series (although the Klingon Empire has it). Yet this is one of the technologies that is closest to becoming a reality today. There are devices that cloak small objects up to the size of people, but making an entire spaceship disappear is still quite a ways away. Communication Devices: In Star Trek, no one goes anywhere without one. All members of Starfleet carried with them a device that allowed them to communicate with other members of the crew. In reality, many people dont go anywhere without their smartphones, and there are even working comm badges. Tricorder-like Devices: In Star Trek, portable sensors are used in the field for everything from medical diagnoses to rock and atmospheric sampling. Todays spacecraft on Mars and beyond use such sensors, although not quite yet portable. In recent years, teams of inventors have created working medical tricorder-like machines that are already making their way into the market.   The Star Trek-style tricorder medical devised may come to us as part of apps for smartphones, as shown in this cell phone-like device that records health data. Getty Images Possible, but Highly Improbable Time Travel: Time travel into the past or the future is not in strict violation of the laws of physics. However, the amount of energy needed to accomplish such a feat takes the practicality of it out of reach. Wormholes: A wormhole is a theoretical construct of general relativity that, under certain circumstances can be created in places like black holes. The main problem is that passing through (or even approaching) a wormhole created by such objects would be potentially deadly. The alternative is to create a wormhole in a location of your choosing, but this would require the presence of exotic matter that isnt known to exist in large quantities and would require so much energy that it is not likely we could ever achieve it. So while wormholes may very well exist, it seems highly improbable that we would ever be able to travel through one. A science-fiction look at a spacecraft traveling through a wormhole to another galaxy. So far, scientists have not found a way to make such technology possible. NASA Warp Drive: Like wormholes, warp drive does not violate any laws of physics. However, it too would require such immense amounts of energy and exotic matter that it seems improbable that developing such technology will ever be possible. Energy Shields and Tractor Beams: These technologies are linchpins to the Star Trek series. We could someday have technologies that have a similar effect as those used in the films. However, they will likely work in a much different manner. Matter-antimatter Power: The starship Enterprise famously uses a matter-antimatter reaction chamber to create the energy used to power the ship. While the principle behind this power plant is sound, the problem is creating enough antimatter to make it practical. As of today, it is extremely unlikely that we will ever obtain enough antimatter to justify making such a device. Most Likely Impossible Artificial Gravity: Of course, we actually have artificial gravity technology in use today. For these applications, we use rotating centrifuges to produce a similar effect to gravity, and such devices may make their way onto spacecraft of the future. However, this is quite different from what is used in Star Trek. There, an anti-gravitational field is somehow created on board the starship. While this may be possible someday, our current understanding of physics is at a loss as to how this might actually work. This is mostly because we dont actually understand gravity that well. So it is possible that this technology might move up the list as our scientific understanding grows.Instantaneous Matter Transport: Beam me up, Scotty! Its one of the most famous lines in all of science fiction. And while it allows the plot of the Star Trek films to move along at a more rapid pace, the science behind the technology is sketchy at best. Our sun began to attract its planets and on one planet, after eons, life began. The second part makes me think of plants growing and spreading life all over the earth. Saturn was forming its rings and Venus gather in it clouds. Maybe Mars had a start at life also, but in the music, I can hear it wither away. Finally, as man came on the scene the angels sang and all the bells rang to mark the beginning of civilization. In this music, I hear heavy horns with loud base and many drums. The drums are the low sounding ones, such as kettledrums and big base drums. The strings are used to mark times that are more tranquil and the small, high-pitched instruments are used to create the sounds of life. The instruments used in this music seldom sound altogether. They seem to be painting a huge picture or maybe telling a story. Each group of instruments seems to have its own part and only a few times does the whole orchestra play together. I will listen to this again, because it is so complex that I know I cannot even hear it all at one sitting. The video was really very helpful. I learned about the way the music is created and why. The discussions about theory and different cultures that used different theory explain why some music to me does not sound good. This music comes close a few times to not sounding good, but then it moves back into what I like very soon. Seeing the orchestra play, this piece was really important for me as I could see the various instruments as they took up their parts. I did not even hear the oboes and I knew nothing about the special big horn used in this symphony. I thought the music was a little like a story or a conversation, so the video showing where this comes from was really interesting. I think if there were a lot of these about classical music then children would become interested in classical music

Project Execution Design and detail engineering : Contractor In house Fabrication and shop priming: At site(if fabrication area is available) If no area is available at site, then fabrication will be done at our fabrication shop Erection at site: Contractor In house team Surface preparation and painting through reputed sub contractors. Typical Project Execution Plan Project execution plan organization Contractor formal role in the project implementation will commence from the signing of the Agreement between the Client and Contractor. However, the effective participation of the contractor will start from the date of receipt of letter of intent (LOI) and the project kick off meeting, where project scope and basis will be formally agreed. Contractors Organization Charts The Contractor will appoint a Project Manager to take total charges of scope of work for which they are responsible. The structure is shown in the organization charts. 1.2 Overall Project Execution The Project Manager and his team are the primary interface point between the Contractor and Client. It is via this interface that all the day-to-day correspondence passes and project report are issued. The Project Manager with his team oversees the contractors scope of work. The projects coordinator is responsible for the coordination between Client, Engineering, Procurement, Fabrication and the Site Operation. As soon as LOI is issued internal Kick-off meeting will be held to firm up the project procedures. In order the successfully achieve its objective the Project Manager issues the Project Dossier detailing the interface between Contractor and the Client. It sets out the detailed working method to be employed by them though all phases of the job. With the co-ordination procedure the project schedule and methods of measuring progress and controlling the work are also issued. Inventory Procedure Quality Control Shipping Procedure and Forecast Field Project Control Procedure Field Safety Procedure Change Order Procedure. 1.3 Design and Engineering The Client has given the basic design. The detailed design for Contractor (in house) will carry out the project 2. Procurement Sub- contracting Contractor will prepare material requisition for all plant, equipment and materials and the Procurement in-charge shall manage the procurement and sub contracting. He will establish the procurement plan, identifying the finite list of requisition to be issued by the engineering groups, to start procurement cycle. Contractor will issue enquiries and obtain offers. Purchase orders will be placed by the contractor on vendors approved by Client, offering best Techno-commercial terms. A list of critical long lead items will be established including long lead item and those critical to programs. Special monitoring of these items will be carried out to ensure timely delivery. Procurement service offered by the contractor will include bid evaluation, arranging vendor coordination meetings, selection, placement of purchase orders, amendment of purchase order and modified if necessary, to reflect any specific requirements of the specific order. 3. Construction Contractors Construction group will supervise the construction to be carried out in a phased manner. It will be responsible for field inspection, material and inventory control and logistics for timely executing of the project. Contractors Project Manager will ensure quality and schedule so that the construction is done as per the detailed design/engineering document prepared by Client and within agreed time frame. 4. Pre-commissioning and commissioning The Commissioning Group headed by the Commissioning Engineer of the contractor will direct and supervise to provide the necessary assistance to the pre-commissioning and commissioning activities of Client. Project in co-ordination with the Commissioning in-charge of Main contractor/consultant. The major activities of this group will include: Check plant units for mechanical completion at size. Prepare pre-commissioning programme to assign priorities during final stage of counteraction work. Planning and scheduling of plant start up activities. Co-ordinate and supervise the start up of the plant. Main contractor/consultant shall conduct process guarantee test turns. 5. Project scheduled, control and reporting Contractors system of project planning scheduling and monitoring is designed to provide comprehensive planning services to the project management team. This system is instrumental in devising realistic schedules establishing checkpoints, keeping overall watch on the progress, deviation from schedules, pinpointing the problem and recommending areas of corrective actions. The details are given below: 6. Planning Scheduling 6.1 Proposed Schedule and overall project schedule The proposed project schedule is submitted along with this proposal. This indicates the project starts date, end date and major milestones of the project the proposed schedule is prepared in the form of bar chart schedule. On award of the control, the proposed schedule is converted into an overall project schedule in the form of squared PERT network on time scale. This network includes overall engineering, procurement and construction duration as well as critical and near critical items for each system. This overall schedule forms the basis for execution of the contract and is used for corporate project review. 6.2 Master Network For project control, master network is prepared for the project, master network is updated internally every month, this is revised if (i) The overall project schedule is revised, (ii) There is a major change in the scope of work, (iii) unforeseen events beyond contractors control. The master network forms the basis for detailed scheduling and project control. 6.3 Function Schedules At the level of the executing departments, functional schedules are prepared for all functions, viz. process, residual engineering, ordering and delivery. Standard Networks for various functions are used for sequencing various activities in the schedules. These schedules are also used for scheduling projects physical progress and its measurement. 6.4 Key Construction Network This network is delivered from master network. This is made, work area wise, on time scale The number of networks to be prepared depends upon the workload into which the plant is divided. These networks are prepared at a time when engineering and procurement activities have sufficiently advanced and construction activities are about to begin or major milestones such as deliveries of equipments at site, start and completion of civil works, mechanical erection etc., are about to be achieved. 6.5 Reports Basically, three types of reports are produced. First type of report contains activities to be performed in next two months and is known as Activity List. Second type of reports gives the status of drawings, materials, etc. and is named Status Report, which highlights the deviations and exceptions and immediate actions. The Third Type of Reports is the one, which summarize progress report at various time intervals. 6.6 Monthly Progress Report Monthly progress report is basically meant for Client. This report gives a comprehensive coverage of engineering, procurement and construction activities carried out during the month under review. The monthly report apprises the Client of the progress of the project and holds up if an in achieving the progress. The report contains the following information: Overall progress statistics Status of milestones List of problems/hold ups Functional progress curves Quantitative status report for equipment Detailed status of construction D.
